Case Study: XTRF's Testimonial Video

Updated: Feb 23, 2024

Videos with client reviews aren't necessarily exciting to watch unless you include one crucial element.

What's the secret sauce to a good client review video? It's structure! Here's a sample case study of a testimonial clip I made for XTRF.

TL;DR

XTRF, a pioneer in software for managing translation businesses, celebrated its 10th year with a big rebranding that included a testimonial video. The video featured short, interesting stories from four clients about their experiences with XTRF. Filmed against a striking matte-black backdrop for a cinematic feel, the video unfolded a linear storyline. It underscored the clients' challenges before using XTRF, their rationale for opting for XTRF, and the changes after adopting the software.

My role: Scriptwriting & art direction, prepare questions for the interviewees, conduct the interview.

Client: XTRF Translation Business Management Software

Industry: Management software for translation businesses, SaaS, B2B

Context

XTRF is a pioneer in management software for translation businesses. The company celebrated its 10th anniversary and decided it was time for a major rebrand. As such, they commenced a range of new marketing materials for their website and also decided to make a video of customer reviews to bolster their place in the market.

Objective

The video needed to feature some current clients, sharing their XTRF experiences. It had to be brief yet interesting. The word "interesting" is crucial here.

Many videos, regardless of their production quality, often lack structure. I frequently come across testimonial videos filled with random scenes praising a company that leave me unsure about what I'm supposed to learn from those clips after watching.

A good review video tells a story that answers these questions:

  • What issues did the client have before they started using the services of the company they're praising?

  • How did they decide on this company?

  • What changes occurred, and how did the praised company fix the client's problems?

With these points in mind, I created a question set for the interviewees to ensure my video would be well-structured.

The Making Of

Besides writing the script and overseeing the video production, I also interviewed the guests.

XTRF invited four real users to help make the video. Each interviewee received a set of questions before the recording and we stuck to a strict time regime of 10 minutes for each person. We used a matte-black wall for the video background to make it different from other companies' review videos. The final result looks cinematic.

Results

This video presented a linear development of how the XTRF's clients incorporated the software into their companies. It starts with an overview of the guests' roles, the problems they faced before using XTRF, why they chose this particular software, and the improvements they've seen since using it.
